On 11 July 2010 ZLSM, former SJ 1289 stands with a steam shuttle to Kerkrade in Simpelveld. In 1994 the ZLSM hit the headlines when they bopught three Swedish steam locos out of the then disbanded military reserve (the possible deployment of nuclear weapons in the event of a war would take out electrics and diesel-electric tractions because of the Electro-Magnetic Pulse or EMP, that overloads everything electric thus disabling a big chunck of the railway traction park. Steam engines are not subject to the effects of an EMP). One of these steamers, 1289 was sponsored by the Netherlands Spoorwegmuseum at Utrecht and received a Dutch steamer livery in green and black. Sadly, 1289 is also out of order at the ZLSM for more than a decade.
