NMBS 2707 runs round in Maastricht on 27 August 2001. The church in the background is the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kerk, the second most important church in Maastricht after the Sint-Servaes -courtesy of the dual regime (the Condominium) over Maastricht in the Middle Ages. The Southern part of Maastricht was held by the Prince-Bisshopric of Liége for centuries, whereas the Northern part was ruled by a succession of counts and dukes, amongst them the Count of Limbourg, the Duke of Brabant and Holy Roman Emperor Charels V Habsburg. When the Republic of the United Netherlands definitively conquered and kept Maastricht, they claimed the sway over all Maastricht, ending an interesting and at times very nasty ruling.
