In 2018 NS used a sale-and-lease-back construction with Akiem to cut costs on the locos and from December 2025 all NS Class 186 were returned to Akiem, who lost no time in removing the yellow and blue. 

Since December 2025 all ICR hauled services have been consigned to the past, ending 150 years of loco haulauge passenger trains in national scheduled services within the Netherlands.
