Shortly before Erstfeld, most trains heading south leave the route of the "old Gotthard" railway and travel through the Gotthard bass tunnel. Since this is currently only in very limited operation, most passenger trains and some freight trains, with a few exceptions, are rerouted via the "old Gotthard railway route", now also called the "Gotthard Panorama route". This means that high-quality passenger trains are safe when passing through Erstfeld Daily life again for a short time.
