How times change: a few years ago I would have turned up my nose and not photographed the ICN passing through Airolo, today I am happy that I can photograph an ICN between all the Giruno trains: The SBB RABe 500 006 Johanna Spyri as IC 2 10865 on the way from Zurich HB to Lugano passes the highlight of its journey in Airolo and is now heading through the Leventina towards its destination drive. Unmistakably a follow-up shot... With snow swirling, an SBB Re 460 pushes its IC 21 10667 towards Lugano after leaving the Gotthard Tunnel in Airolo. The train runs from Basel SBB to Lugano. January 21, 2025

Of course, I also photographed the RABe 501 Giruno , which has since become dominant on the Gotthard axis; No matter how dominant they may be, they are not an everyday occurrence on the Gotthard Panorama Route : As a result of planned maintenance work in the Gotthard Base Tunnel, most IC/EC will run from Monday to Friday from January 13th to January 24th, 2025 via Göschenen - Airolo . After the sun disappeared behind the mountains in Airolo at midday, things turned out well in Göschenen from midday onwards. The picture was taken near the Göschenen entrance signal and shows the two SBB RABe 501 016 Glarus at the front and 501 008 Monte Ceneri at the end as IC 21 10671 on the journey from Basel SBB to Lugano.

The Railpool 186 497 arrived in Airolo with an empty train intended to load excavated material from the Gotthard road tunnel (2nd tube). The wagons are already being loaded and the 186 497 is shunting so that it can then take over the loaded wagons.

The MGB Orion ABeh 8/12 312 stopped in Göschenen a few meters too early, so that the driver's cab is unfortunately in the shade. The train is in use on the Andermatt - Göschenen - Andermatt route.

The Combe Tabeillon train station was built at the very back in the deep valley. Here the CJ trains change their direction on the journey from Glovelier to La Chaux de Fonds. Through this hairpin bend, the route gains the necessary altitude on this route.
In the picture the CJ Be 4/4 with its ABt 712 shortly before continuing its journey.

The CEV MVR ABeh 2/6 7504 Vevey is waiting in the snowy Les Avants as R 34 2317 for the departure (from 1:13 p.m.) to Montreux (at 1:43 p.m.). As the kilometer sign on the contact line mast on the right of the picture shows, Montreux is only 8 km from Les Avants. What is not visible here is the height difference of 575 meters from Les Avants (970 m) to Montreux (395 m). January 3, 2025

A few minutes later the CEV MVR ABeh 2/6 7504 Vevey arrived at the pretty Chamby train station as R 34 2317 on the way from Les Avants to Montreux. Chamby is located at 749 m above sea level. There is hardly any snow to be seen here.

Barely 19 minutes after the departure from the snow-covered Les Avants, the CEV MVR ABeh 2/6 7504 Vevey is on the way as R 34 2317 to Montreux near Planchamp (530 m above sea level) between strong palm trees.

How well the CJ can still open the windows on some trains (but unfortunately can hardly be closed anymore...): When entering Combe Tabeillon I was able to photograph the CJ Be 4/4 616 with a freight train.
The freight train waits for our train and then heads towards La Chaux de Fonds. Combe Tabillon is a Spitzkher station, as can still be found every now and then in the Jura.

The Mallet steam locomotive 2-8-8-2 - Y6b 2197 of the Norfolk & Western, which is powerful even in H0, fights its way through the snow. The design of the Mallet model locomotives is based on information provided by the U.S.R.A. (United States Raitroad Administration) introduced during the First World War. The class Y6b locomotives were delivered from 1936. Basically, the Y6b class was designed to pull heavy freight trains at 30 mph, but in good conditions up to 50 mph could be achieved.

The model of this articulated locomotive type Mallet “Y 6 b” from the “Norfolk & Western” is probably a good 50 to 60 years old and is a very impressive model implementation in terms of size. It doesn't seem entirely logical to me why the engine was squeezed into the driver's cab with so much space in order to then drive the distant bogies using long cardan shafts. The tender is prototypically equipped with two three-axle Buckeye bogies, which are also used to collect power.

The model probably hasn't been driven for a good twenty to thirty years. After I dismantled the model and degreased and re-oiled the moving parts, it has been running again since yesterday, even if I have both the cars and the route for the discontinuation of the mighty model missing.

After it snowed overnight, the landscape above about 800 meters above sea level appears in a magical winter dress for a short time. Reason enough to drive to Les Avants, located at 900 meters above sea level, and capture the white splendor before it melts away. Against the backdrop of snow-covered forests, the CEV MVR ABeh 2/6 7507 is on the way from Montreux to Les Avants as RE 34.
